the phelps family are described as "the most hated family in america" .. why does so much of what they say sound so horribly familiar?
that is scary ... why does what they say in public sound very much like what dubs say among themselves in private.
I have just finished watching the documentary too. Like you I found the similarities quite frightening. Whilst its true that during my time as a witness I would have never have publicly been so outspoken, it is so true that behind closed doors those exact kinds of coments and beliefs were evrywhere. That same bigotted attitude that God was with us and only us was consistant.

i had a boat that i always wanted to name "return visits" that way whenever i was asked why i wasn't in field service on saturday i could respond, "i went out on return visits" and nobody would be the wiser.
just wondering, did anyone else come up with a good way to dodge that question?.

A little while before giving up field service altogether, while I was still an elder, I would turn up to field service meetings and then have to go off to do some congregational business. Or somtimes I would do as you did and make up return visits. Usually though my return visits were to the coffe shop or sometimes the pub!!
hey everybody, i had an interesting time pushing a tract that i don't believe in this weekend.
i had to develop my own method of placing it without having to talk about it, since i fear if i was confronted by someone asking "do you people think you're the only true religion", i might break down and tell the person at the door "no, i don't".
the witness at the door with me would scream in terror, and i would be insta-dfed.
For those of us who have little or no contact with former witness friends could anyone scan a copy of this KN37 tract so we can see what it is all about? Though I expect its the same old crap thats been peddled for as long as I can remember.

well, after looking at this, any faithful witness would have to say a firm "no" to a witness wedding!
so.. if weddings, and all their customs are ok for witnesses, then why in the heck are the holidays off limits?

With all its pagan backgrounds, I see no alternative other than no more witness weddings. This leads to a predictable equation........ No more weddings + no pre-marital sex = lots of frustrated witnesses!!!!

When publishing a book the WTS is careful to keep the actual authors anonymous. They have a writing committee who decide what should be included and left out. The only times you will see the writer credited for his work is when the Awake publishes one of its life stories. Then sometimes the author is credited, but only then if the author is also the subject of the piece.
i came it to the watchtower in the early seventies.
while my friends were going to college i was out selling watchtowers.
for some reason while cleaning the garage this morning i was thinking about this and thinking of the doctor i used to go to back then.
Very true, and it doesn’t just stop at doctors. I know of several witnesses who in the early 70's sold houses and businesses in order to proclaim the impending destruction of 1975. One person I know who did that is still suffering the financial backlash of giving away the proceeds from the sale of his very successful business to the org. Funny thing is he is still an active witness elder. How odd!!

i am turning the page on my former life.
there are new hopes and dreams out there for me, and i no longer want to have the jw feelings holding me back.
as helpful as it was to talk about and sort out my feelings i just don't feel i have any more to say.. for all of those who helped me sort out my feelings, i will always be grateful.
As a person who drops in to this site periodically, and then goes for months without dropping by, I understand what you are saying. Sometimes its good to just let the past fade to the past when we are ready for that.
Most of my recent posts have had nothing to do with the dubs, but occasionally somthing gets to me and I sound off about it. That is why this site is so good.

i have heard many urban myths associated with the watchtower society and its hapless adherents.
i like the one where an "interested one" accepted the invitation to attend the memorial one year, and sat next to a "sister" who let the confused attendee use her bible to look up scriptures as they were presented.
afterword, the "sister" walked the man up to the circuit overseer, who had delivered the talk that year, and introduced the dupe-filled "study" to the co. the co complimented the man on his spiritual interest and asked what impelled him to come up and talk to him.
Here is a very well known story that I have heard from childhood......
During the Second World War the governing body could not make their mind up over something. So they decided to let Jehovah answer. At that time there was a massive shortage of coal, and supplies were severely limited. Having prayed, they decided that they would order a massive supply of coal for use at Brooklyn, their wise idea being that if the coal was delivered this showed their decision had Jehovah's approval, where as if it was not delivered it would demonstrate that they did not have Jehovah's approval.
It goes without saying, of course that the coal was delivered; hence they assumed Jehovah's approval!!
The other well known one was how banned literature that had been quickly hidden in an oven before a surprise search began, magically transformed themselves in to cakes. So when the guards opened the oven doors all they saw were several cakes!!!!
Naturally, I like all the other brain washed dubs believed this and other fantastic stories to be true, which of course proved my faith true also.
I wonder if the society has a team of fantasy writers who regularly make up this crap to strengthen the faith of all those followers who take it all in and fall prey to their 'Spiritual Fairy Stories?.
